Challenge
To introduce Gus Fring’s first appearance on “Better Call Saul” without using BB footage nor BCS footage. Bring lapsed BCS and BB viewers and adhere to Vince Gilligan’s continuity standards.
Solutions
I needed to transform a working restaurant into the BB icon LPH. LPH as not a standing set for BCS so we had to rebuild the location as the show did. I had to manage show talent, vendors, show writers, show crew and Sony legal to produce this content.
The night before, I was alerted by Giancarlo’s assistant that he missed his flight from Texas. We had to flip the entire schedule to allow for his landing day of the shoot.
We also discovered that same day, Sony did not own the IP on the Los Pollos Hermanos logo. Working with the show EPs, AMC and Sony legal we devised a plan to double cover every shot that had a logo in it - without increasing the time with talent or budget.
Outcome
As Adweek said, an acclaimed spot which spawned the Emmy award winning short “Gus’s training video”
